User roles: what each role can access

Compare the five Nexl user roles and see what each one can access.

Written by Candice Connellan

Nexl has five standard user roles: Admin, Manager, Individual Lawyer, Restricted Lawyer and Support. Each role controls which menus a user sees and what they can view or change.

Your firm's Nexl admins assign roles in Admin → User Management.

The five roles at a glance

Admin. Full firm-wide access plus the Admin menu (User Management, Data Cleaner, Reporting, integrations and settings). Typically used by BD and Marketing teams and Managing Partners.

Manager. The same firm-wide access as Admin (All Contacts, All Prospects, All Opportunities, All Objectives, Referrals), but no Admin menu. Suits BD or practice leaders who need visibility without managing settings.

Individual Lawyer. For most lawyers. Manages their own contacts, companies, meetings, tasks, prospects and opportunities. Can see all firm-wide Companies and view Marketing Lists.

Restricted Lawyer. Like Individual Lawyer, but contact details (such as email address and phone number) are hidden on every contact.

Support. For assistants and support staff. Like Individual Lawyer, but My Contacts, My Companies, Meetings, Stay in Touch, Prospecting and Opportunities are hidden. To act on a lawyer's behalf, pair this role with Delegate Access.

Settings your firm can change

Some permissions are set per role and can differ between firms:

  • Exports – which lists each role can export (contacts, companies, marketing lists, opportunities and more).

  • Archiving contacts and companies, and renaming companies.

  • Viewing interaction details (the View Contact Activities permission).

  • Email marketing campaigns – access to all campaigns, and whether a role can edit them.

To change any of these, speak to your firm's Nexl admins or contact Nexl Support.

Need something in between?

Admins can create custom roles based on the Individual Lawyer role, then switch on extra access such as All Contacts, All Prospects or exports. See Guide for Custom User Roles.
