How to Enable Web Push Notifications on macOS

Step 1: Access System Settings

  • Open System Settings: Click on the Apple logo at the top left of your screen and select "System Settings."

  • Find Notifications: In the settings menu, look for the "Notifications" option.

  • Select Your Browser: Locate the browser you want to enable web push notifications for (e.g., Chrome or Firefox).

  • Enable Notifications: Make sure that notifications for this browser are enabled. Look for a toggle or checkbox to confirm this.

Step 2: Verify Notification Permissions

  • In the browser, click on the Site Information icon and toggle the "Notifications" option. (This might look differently in other browsers.)

Step 3: Enabling push notification for new users

  • For new users, make sure to enable the web push notification from the Magic Bell preference at the bottom of the notification pop-up.

Step 4: Enabling push notification for existing users

Existing users should be able to display this option by deleting the magic bell key from their browser local storage.

  • Reset Cookies:

    • Open the browser and go to "More Tools" > "Developer Tools."

    • Navigate to "Local Storage" and find the domain associated with MagicBell.

    • Look for the entry labeled "MagicBell" and delete it. This action will reset your subscription status.

  • Re-subscribe: Once you've cleared the cookies, return to the MagicBell application. You should now see the "Enable Now" button. Click it.

How to Enable Web Push Notifications on Windows

Step 1: Access Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings: Click on the Start menu or type "Settings" in the search bar and select the "Settings".

  2. Navigate to System: In the Settings menu, click on "System," then select "Notifications."

  3. Enable Browser Notifications: Make sure that notifications for both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are enabled. You should see them listed in the notifications settings.

Step 2: Configure Browser Notification Settings

For Google Chrome:

  2. Go to Privacy and Security: Within the Settings menu, click on "Privacy and security."

  3. Site Settings: Under "Site settings," find "Notifications."

  4. Allow Notifications: Make sure that the sites you want to receive notifications from (e.g., "Muddy Mountain") are listed under "Allowed." If not, manually add the URL to allow notifications.

For Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Edge Settings: Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the Edge browser, then select "Settings."

  2. Cookies and Site Permissions: Navigate to "Cookies and site permissions."

  3. Manage Notifications: Click on "Notifications." Similar to Chrome, ensure that the desired websites are added under "Allow."

Step 3: Enabling push notification for new users

  1. For new users, make sure to enable the web push notification from the Magic Bell preference at the bottom of the notification pop-up.

Step 4: Enabling push notification for existing users

  1. Inspect Browser Storage:

    • In Chrome, right-click on the page and select "Inspect," then navigate to the "Application" tab.

    • In the left sidebar, find "Local Storage," and look for your site's domain name (e.g., MagicBell).

    • Right-click on the entry for "MagicBell" and select "Delete."

  2. Re-enable Notifications: After deleting the entry, refresh the page. The "Enable Now" button should now appear, allowing you to resubscribe to notifications.

Step 5: Quick troubleshooting if error occurs while enabling push notification:

  1. Clear Cache and Cookies:

    1. Go to Chrome's settings, find "Privacy and security," and select "Clear browsing data."

    2. Choose "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," then click "Clear data."

  2. Reload and Sign In: After clearing the data, reload the page and sign in again. You should see a "Subscribe" button if the previous subscription data has been cleared.

  3. Create Another Task: Create a new task to ensure notifications appear for both Chrome and Edge again.
