How to Use Prava: The Lawyer’s AI Notetaker

Prava is a secure AI note-taking solution purpose-built for lawyers, created by Nexl.


It combines a physical recording device with a mobile app that allows users to record, transcribe, and summarize meetings or calls.

The system is designed for professional confidentiality, local data control, and legal compliance across jurisdictions.

1. Getting Started

1.1 What’s Included in your Prava Device

Your Prava device includes:

  1. Recording Mode Switch

  7. Magnetic Ring

  8. Magnetic Charging Cable

1.2 Downloading the Prava App

The Prava mobile app is required to use any of the system’s smart functionality — including transcription, summaries, and action-item generation.

Steps to Download:

  1. Open the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).

  2. Search for “Prava Notetaker"

  3. Tap Download or Install.

  4. Open the app and sign in or create an account.

  5. Allow Bluetooth, notifications, and location access when prompted — this is required for device pairing and operation.

Note:
Without the app, the device can only record locally. All transcription and summary functionality requires the Prava mobile app.


2. Binding, Unbinding, and Data Deletion

2.1 Binding Your Device

Each Prava device is physically bound to a single user account via Bluetooth pairing. This “one device to one user” setup ensures controlled access and prevents cross-device sharing.

Steps to Bind:

  1. Power on your Prava device (hold the Record button for 3 seconds).

  2. Open the Prava App.

  3. Follow on-screen instructions to pair initially via Bluetooth. If the bluetooth button is present, that means the device is not connected.

Note:
During binding, your phone may request Bluetooth and location access — these permissions are required for discovery and connection.

2.2 Unbinding and Auto-Wipe

Unbinding disconnects your Prava device from the app and allows the option to remove all data associated from the Prava device.

Steps to Unbind:

  1. Open the Prava App.

  2. Go to Device Settings (Hamburger menu)Advanced Options.

  3. Select Unbind Device.

  4. Confirm when prompted to delete all files or keep them on Prava device.

Result of Unbinding:

  • The Prava device is removed from your account.

  • All local recordings and files are deleted automatically, if selected.

  • Once unbound, the device can be paired to a new user.

Important:
If selected, data is permanently deleted from the Prava device when unbound.


3. Recording and Transcription

3.1 Recording Modes

  • Slide the mode switch to the right.

  • Place the device on a desk or hold it during a meeting or reflection.

Call Recording Mode

  • Slide the mode switch to the left.

  • Attach Prava magnetically to your phone for vibration-based call recording.

Status Indicators:

  • One vibration = recording started

  • Two vibrations = recording stopped and saved

3.2 Recording via the App

  • Tap Record in the app to start, pause, or stop recording.

  • Files sync automatically when the device reconnects.

  • Tap any file to transcribe, summarize, or review.

3.3 AI Summaries and Action Items

After transcription, the Prava app will generate:

  • Summaries: Key takeaways and decisions.

  • Transcript: Word-for-word transcription

  • Mind Map: Themes broken out into a visual diagram.

All AI functions are performed within Nexl’s private Azure OpenAI Whisper instance.

Summary:

  • Audio files are stored on the device and in the app.

  • Transcripts and summaries never leave your phone unless you choose to export or share.

  • Nexl cannot access or view your recordings.

4.2 Deleting Files

You can delete files directly from the Prava app.

Steps:

  1. Open the Prava App.

  2. Go to your recordings list

  3. Click on file menu ()

  4. Choose delete file

Note:
Deleted files are permanently removed from both your device and phone storage.


5. Legal and Compliance Guidance

5.1 Consent and Disclosure

Users are fully responsible for obtaining consent before recording any conversation.


Prava may display reminders about consent obligations, but compliance rests with the user.


This is particularly important in two-party consent jurisdictions.

5.2 Confidential Information

All recordings and transcripts are user-controlled.


Nexl cannot access content unless a user explicitly shares it for support or troubleshooting purposes.

5.3 Data Processing Role

Nexl acts as a data processor for transcription and summarization.


All processing occurs within a segregated Azure OpenAI environment, using a dedicated instance that does not train on or retain customer data.

5.4 Liability and Use Limitations

Users must not employ Prava for unlawful purposes or misuse (such as recording without consent or outside professional contexts).


Nexl disclaims all responsibility for improper use of the device or app.

5.5 Device Binding and Auto-Wipe

If deletion is selected, data stored on a device is automatically removed when the device is unbound.

5.6 International Use

Recording laws and privacy standards differ by jurisdiction.


Users must comply with all local professional and ethical obligations when using Prava.

5.7 Location Data

During initial setup and binding, the Prava app requires Bluetooth and location permissions to detect and connect your device.


This information is used solely for connectivity and is not stored as part of user recordings or transcripts.
